Clos Pegase The Intersection between Art and Wine
If you want to experience a winemaker’s love for art, visit the Clos Pegase the next time you stay in Napa Valley. This winery is located in the town of Calistoga, just a short distance from Napa Valley Hotel and Suites, and it’s filled with amazing sculptures and other forms of fine art. In fact, Clos Pegase is considered the intersection between art and wine. While other wineries have tried to pull off this vision, Clos Pegase is certainly one of the most successful.
Upon entering the fanciful building, visitors are greeted by sculptures in many colors, patterns, shapes and sizes. The design of Clos Pegase is carried out by Michael Graves, who focuses on bright colors and strong lines that mirror the nearby wineries that are inspired by Tuscan villas and European castles.
The sculptures found at Clos Pegase are fun and playful, such as the giant thumb that everyone talks about. There are also Italian fountains, a large gallery, paintings, vineyards, colorful architecture and the rolling hills of Calistoga in the background. With art in every corner of the winery, there’s something for everyone to appreciate. Even children will enjoy the colorful buildings and jovial atmosphere, making the Clos Pegase a fun activity for a group or family.
Visitors don’t have to make any special preparations before visiting Clos Pegase, but having a background on Greek mythology is helpful. The winery got its name from Pegasus, and it looks to Greek mythology for inspiration on arts and culture. Don’t be surprised to see hints of ancient Greek mythology in the sculptures and architecture of the building, more specifically from Pegasus, Bacchus and Gaia.
Visitors will also enjoy the winery itself, with old oak barrels and handcrafted artisan wines. Some of the most popular wines include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. There are a number of events held at Clos Pegase, and the Harvest Bacchanal and Grape Stomp will be held on September 21, 2013. This is one winery where people can witness a real grape stomp competition! It’s a fun way to close out the summer months and bring in grape stomp season.
