What is it Like to Go on a Wine Tour?
You’ve finally signed up for a wine tour – congratulations! Wine tours are as common as water out here in Wine Country, and just about everyone who stays a weekend enjoys at least one of these noteworthy tours. But what exactly is a wine tour like? What can you expect?
What is a Wine Tour?
Wine tours are educational experiences. To make the most of the visit, you should be open to learning new things and having an appreciation for the resources that our world relies on for revenue and job opportunities. In Napa Valley, the wineries are very accustomed to doing tours, so you’ll have no trouble seeing the wineries that you want to. Some prefer more intimate gatherings and request that visitors sign up in advance while others welcome tourists at any time. If you have a few wineries in mind, check with them beforehand to learn their policies. Otherwise, you can wait until you get a few good recommendations from the locals.
What Happens on a Wine Tour?
When you arrive at the winery, your wine tour will consist of touring the vineyards and walking through the rows of the season’s harvests. Some tours are led by tour guides who talk about the history of the winery. Depending on the time of the year, you may be able to pick grapes and sample them right off the vine. After you walk through the outdoor vineyards, you’ll be invited inside the winery to see the production areas and try some samples. If you like what you taste, you can purchase a bottle – or two – of wine.
Different Ways to Tour
Some visitors choose to tour Wine Country using their own itinerary while others go along with a group. Professional tour companies are a nice fit for many travelers because they provide transportation and tourist information. These tours include a certain number of people and they drop off tourists at several different wineries for samplings and visits. Tours do cost more, however, so if you’re on a budget, you will find that traveling on your own will be cheaper. Most wineries do not charge for their tours and even allow sampling for free.
