Visiting the Frys.com Open
If you’re a fan of golf you’re going to want to be in Napa this week for the Frys.com Open FedEx Cup tournament. The event, held at the Silverado Resort and Spa, runs through October 18th and promises to be an incredible event for participants and spectators alike.
First and foremost, it’s important to acknowledge that proceeds from this long-standing tradition do benefit charity. The primary tournament beneficiary is the American Institute of Mathematics. Founded in 1994 by John Fry, AIM’s main goal is to help broaden awareness of and participation in mathematical sciences at all levels of life. The organization works with young students just learning about creative problem solving as well as with professional mathematicians working on some of today’s most important problems.
The American Institute of Mathematics puts on almost 2 dozens workshops each year and focuses research efforts on both pure and applied mathematics. The Math Teachers’ Network helps middle school teachers encourage students. The group also partners with the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festivals group to bring one-day events to school-age children throughout the country.
