Tips for a Successful Winery Visit

If you’re planning on attending a wine tour, you want to make the most out of the experience. Wine tours are great opportunities to learn about the business and the wine economy; you’ll certainly leave with more than just wine in your hand! Here are helpful tips for a successful wine visit when touring Napa Valley.

  • Hire a designated driver. You’ll probably drink more wine that you plan to, and those little sips add up, especially if you’ve been having little sips all day! Plus, many of the wineries are spread out, so you don’t want to be driving or riding a bike if you’ve enjoyed too much wine. To enjoy the experience and not feel limited on your samplings, hire a tour company or car service.

  • Try out the smaller wineries. It’s only normal that you’ll want to visit some of the big-name wineries, but don’t forget the smaller wineries, too. These small wineries offer more intimate tours and personalized attention where you can learn about the wine business and chat with people who work at the winery.

  • Be open to trying new things. It’s amazing how many people attend wine tours but may not be comfortable trying a variety of wines. Instead of sticking to what you know, try new grapes and wine varieties. The people who work at the winery will appreciate your openness to trying to things, and you’ll thank yourself later.

  • Remember that you are sampling. If you want to drink more later, that’s fine. But in the meantime, stick to sampling and tasting/smelling the various notes and aromas. In some instances, you’ll be in someone’s home, and you want to be polite to those around you. Drinking too much can ruin the experience for everyone.

  • Don’t feel pressured to buy. Wineries rely on their tour guests to make a purchase, so you should plan to buy some bottles of wine. But, don’t feel pressured. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and buy more than you need to, but you don’t have to. And, if it turns out that you really love a wine you bought, you can probably purchase it online later and have it shipped to you.

Have a place to keep the wine. You don’t want wine rolling around the car, and you don’t want to leave the wine in a hot car. Have some type of carrying case to keep the wine protected and in a cool environment. Otherwise, have the wine shipped to you at a later date.
