Are Napa Valley Wineries Open During the COVID-19 Outbreak?

May 31, 2020
Category: Napa Valley Things To Do

One of the most frequently asked questions we’re hearing right now is, “Are the wineries in Napa Valley still open during coronavirus?” The short answer – yes. However, each winery is independently owned and may have temporarily shut down amid the COVID-19 outbreak. For this reason, we recommend calling ahead and asking about services and hours of operation.

That said, there have been changes made to Napa Valley’s wineries. On March 19th, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statewide order for Californians to stay home except for essential tasks like purchasing groceries or picking up prescription medications. The purpose of this state shutdown is to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Under this order, all winery and vineyard operations may continue under the Food and Agriculture sector. However, the Governor did request that all bars, pubs and wineries in California close for onsite consumption. Sale for offsite consumption may continue, as long as all social distancing measures are taken.

What Does the State Lockdown Mean for Napa Valley Wineries?

While most wineries are staying open, you may only purchase wine for pickup or delivery. The tasting rooms are closed, and you may not congregate inside the wineries. You can drive to the winery and purchase a bottle to take home with you for date night, or you may order wine for delivery. Again, call ahead to see what services each winery is offering.

With this new order in place, California wineries are also taking the appropriate steps to keep their employees and customers safe. They continue to ship wines through global supply chains, and retail demand remains constant or higher for export markets. Fortunately, California wineries are able to meet this demand.

Support Napa Valley Wineries with Delivery and Pickup Orders

If you’re quarantined at home and reside in the Napa Valley area, don’t hesitate to call your local wineries. While the tasting rooms are closed for now, you can take a drive and pick up a fruity red blend or semi-sweet Pinot Grigio. Or, order wine to be delivered to your doorstep. Many local wineries offer this service for a small fee. For more information on this matter, please visit WineInstitute.org
